“If Governor Moves Without Kwankwaso, He Will Not Get Support” — Galadima

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing protracted internal crises and the need to protect the overall interest of the people of the State, even as the party’s Board of Trustees Secretary, Buba Galadima, predicted that President Bola Tinubu will not win the 2027 presidential election if it is free and fair.

The resignation was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirming widespread speculation about the governor’s imminent departure from the opposition party.

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf conveyed his decision in a letter addressed to the chairman of NNPP, Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale local government area of the State with effect from January 23, 2026. The NNPP flag has been removed from the Kano State Government House.

In the letter, Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the party for the platform and support extended to him since joining the NNPP in 2022, noting that he remained grateful for the goodwill and cooperation he enjoyed throughout his engagement with the party.

The governor attributed his decision to quit the party to persistent leadership disputes, internal disagreements and ongoing legal battles that have continued to destabilise the party’s structure at both state and national levels.

He observed that the unresolved crises had deepened divisions within the party, weakened internal cohesion and created uncertainty among members, describing the situation as increasingly irreconcilable.

“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” Governor Yusuf stated.

He emphasised that the decision was taken in good faith, without bitterness, and reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity and the continued progress of the state.

In a significant political development, the statement revealed that the governor resigned from NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and all the 44 local government chairmen across the state.

The resignation letter was acknowledged by the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who commended the governor for his achievements in infrastructure development, urban renewal, health, education and economic empowerment.

Zubairu admitted the lingering crisis within the party but said the NNPP had no option than to accept the resignation of what he described as its most performing governor.

“I wish to concur with His Excellency on the lingering crisis in our party. Though we are trying our best to contain it, we have no option but to accept the resignation of one of the most performing governors produced by the NNPP,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a television interview on Trust TV’s Daily Politics programme, Buba Galadima, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of NNPP, made bold predictions about the 2027 presidential election while addressing speculation surrounding Governor Yusuf’s political future.

“All that we are praying for is that there should be a free and fair election. When that happens, whoever is the candidate of the APC will lose his deposit,” Galadima declared.

When pressed specifically about President Tinubu’s chances in 2027, Galadima was unequivocal: “In two thousand and twenty-seven, that can get the mandate of the people if there is a free and fair election, Tinubu will not win. He will not win despite all the defections. Free and fair election, let him try it. I challenge him.”

Addressing the wave of governors defecting to the APC, including speculation about Governor Yusuf’s next political move, Galadima drew historical parallels to caution against over-reliance on numerical strength.

“I would have wished that all the thirty-six governors of this country defect to the APC. All of them. In fact, including the non-existent Senate. They should all defect to the APC. That is my prayer. Because this is the only time that God will show them that he installs leaders and he removes leaders,” he said.

Galadima reminded viewers that former President Goodluck Jonathan had 28 governors in his camp during the 2015 election but still lost to President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Why can’t they go and ask PDP or Jonathan? He had twenty-eight governors in his kitty, yet what happened? He lost the election,” Galadima noted.

The NNPP official revealed that the party had adopted a strategic decision over the past three months not to speak to the press about issues surrounding internal party matters, including speculation about Governor Yusuf’s future.

“If you can remember in the last three months, I did not make any appearance in print, radio, or television. I didn’t make any appearance. It was a strategic decision that we made. We allowed you people to say whatever you want to say. We know exactly what we are doing. We keep you guessing and free of charge you give us publicity,” Galadima explained.

Galadima disclosed that NNPP presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso had recently called supporters to reassure them that there was nothing to the speculation about mass defections, and that if there were any such moves, the party could respond forcefully.

“He called his supporters to reassure them that there is nothing like that, and if there is, we can respond. And you know that we can respond forcefully,” Galadima stated.

During the interview, Galadima also shared his controversial view that Peter Obi of the Labour Party actually won the 2023 presidential election, claiming that NNPP’s logo was not on the ballot paper in many places until 10 a.m. on election day.

“Kwankwaso got one point four something million. That was allocated to him. He got more. Me, if you leave me, I would say he won the election. The presidential election? Yes. Because our logo was not on the ballot paper. In fact, it was at ten o’clock that we found out that we are not seeing our logo,” he claimed.

When asked what would happen in Kano amid all the political developments, Galadima remained cryptic but firm on one point: “Let’s wait and see. The governor might likely move. I don’t know. But if he moves, will he get the support of Kwankwaso? If he moves without Kwankwaso, he will not get it.”

He emphasized that Kwankwaso has a party and intends to build it, describing him as a common denominator in Nigerian politics today.

“Every politician in Nigeria today and every leader in Nigeria today talks to Kwankwaso and he is the common denominator,” Galadima asserted.

The resignation of Governor Yusuf, along with virtually the entire NNPP political structure in Kano State, represents a seismic shift in the political landscape of Nigeria’s second-most populous state and deals a significant blow to the opposition NNPP’s national ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
