Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, has called for the transfer of the leader of the proscribed separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from Sokoto State as soon as possible.

Ejimakor made the call on Friday in a post on his personal X account, following a U.S. airstrike on Christmas Day in Sokoto State that targeted the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) camps and killed multiple terrorists, as confirmed by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) in a joint operation with Nigerian forces.

The lawyer argued that this event has exposed Sokoto’s insecurity as a detention site for Kanu, who has been held there since 2021 on terrorism charges.

“The US military strike against terrorists in Sokoto has finally confirmed that Sokoto is riddled with terrorists and thus was never a safe place of custody for MAZI NNAMDI KANU,” Ejimakor said.

“It is now more urgent that he be transferred out of the terrorist belt of Northern Nigeria.”

In November, a Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment upon his conviction for the offence of terrorism.

Justice James Omotosho, while concluding his judgment on Kanu’s trial sentenced him to life imprisonment in relation to counts one, two, four, five and six of the seven-count charge in which he was prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS).

For count three, relating to the offences of belonging to a proscribed terrorist group, Justice Omotosho sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment without an option of fine.

On count seven, relating to his unlawful importation of a radio transmitter for the purpose of furthering the clandestine activities of Radio Biafra, which is not registered in Nigeria, the judge sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment without an option of fine.

The judge, who noted that Kanu had been unruly throughout the trial, said the law allowed the court to sentence him to death for the terrorism offences, but that he, as a Christian, chose to be merciful to the defendant.

Justice Omotosho ordered that the defendant be kept in protective custody in any part of the country, but not in Kuje Prison, Abuja, and that the radio transmitter be forfeited to the Federal Government.

Recall that Justice Omotosho had earlier ordered the removal of Kanu from the courtroom after he became unruly during proceedings.

The judge had earlier dismissed three fresh motions filed by Kanu, stating that they lacked merit. The applications were brought after the case had already been adjourned for judgment.

As Justice Omotosho moved to deliver his ruling, Kanu objected, insisting that the court could not proceed because he had not filed his final written address. Raising his voice, he accused the judge of bias and said the court “did not know the law”.

Following the outburst, Justice Omotosho directed security personnel to remove Kanu from the courtroom. The judge continued reading the final judgment in his absence.

Meanwhile, Mr. Aloy Ejimakor has reacted sharply to the revocation of bail granted to former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) withdrew Malami’s bail, alleging violations of his bail conditions. However, Malami’s Media Aide, Mohammed Bello Doka, dismissed these claims, stating that the revocation resulted solely from the former AGF’s attendance at a political event in Kebbi State and not from any breach of bail terms. Doka described reports suggesting otherwise as “misleading and contrary to the facts.”

In response, Ejimakor took to X, telling Malami to “carry his cross” and experience the impunity and disregard for the rule of law that, according to him, characterized Malami’s tenure in office.

Accusing Malami of masterminding Kanu’s extraordinary rendition from Kenya in violation of international law, Ejimakor wrote: “Malami’s continued detention amidst his back & forth ‘bail issues’ with EFCC exemplifies how Malami falsely accused Mazi Nnamdi Kanu of ‘jumping bail,’ got his bail revoked & okayed the extraordinary rendition that convulsed Nigeria. Truly, what goes around, comes around.”

However, Bashir Ahmad, former presidential media aide has said there is no need calling for the relocation of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB from the Sokoto prison.

Recall that the US military airstrikes in Sokoto had triggered panic over the safety of the convicted secessionist.

Several Nigerians had called for Kanu’s immediate transfer from the Sokoto correctional center for his safety.

But in a post on his official X handle on Friday, Bashir said Kanu is also a terrorist like those being targeted by the US army.

He wrote, “Kanu is a convicted terrorist and the U.S. strikes were aimed at terrorist targets, so under those circumstances, there is no reasonable basis for calling for his relocation”.

President Donald Trump had announced that there were major airstrikes against insurgents in Sokoto on Christmas night.

The contrasting positions of Ejimakor and Bashir Ahmad highlight the polarized views on Kanu’s detention and the implications of the US airstrikes in Sokoto.

While Ejimakor argues that the airstrikes confirm Sokoto is unsafe for Kanu’s detention and he should be transferred, Bashir Ahmad contends that as a convicted terrorist, Kanu is in an appropriate location given that the strikes targeted terrorists.
