The National Judicial Council (NJC) has announced the suspension of three judges, including a Justice of the Court of Appeal, for one year without pay due to judicial misconduct. The decision was made during the Council’s 108th meeting, held on April 29-30, 2025.

The suspended judges have been accused of various breaches of judicial conduct, with their actions deemed to have undermined the integrity of the judiciary. The NJC stated that the suspension without pay would serve as a deterrent to other judicial officers and reinforce the importance of maintaining ethical standards within the judicial system.

One of the judges, Hon. Justice Jane E. Inyang of the Court of Appeal, was found to have breached the Revised Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers. The Council determined that she had misused her position, including issuing improper orders and abusing judicial processes.

Hon. Justice Jane E. Inyang was found to have abused his office by issuing inappropriate Ex parte Orders for the sale of Hon. Udeme Esset’s petrol station and other businesses at interlocutory stage of the case.

The act of judicial misconduct occurred while His Lordship presided over Suit No. FHC/UY/CS/46/2023, at the Federal High Court, Uyo Judicial Division, before his elevation to Court of Appeal.

Furthermore, Hon. Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, has been placed on suspension for one (1) year without pay. His Lordship was also placed on Watch-List for five (5) years and barred from elevation for five (5) years.

Similarly, Hon. Justice Aminu Baffa Aliyu of the Federal High Court, Zamfara Division, and Hon. Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, were also suspended for engaging in acts that violated the NJC’s code. Justice Ekwo, for instance, was accused of delivering rulings without properly hearing the parties involved and ignoring applications to set aside proceedings held in the absence of the concerned parties.

In addition to the suspensions, the NJC has placed these judges on a watch-list, preventing any future elevations within the judicial system for the duration of their suspensions. The NJC has also emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the judiciary, urging the public to be vigilant and report any unethical practices.

This decision by the NJC underscores its commitment to ensuring that judicial officers uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism, and it is a significant move in promoting a corruption-free and accountable judiciary in Nigeria.
