The National Judicial Council (NJC) is set to send the name of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun to President Bola Tinubu today for approval as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

This follows her recommendation by the NJC during its 106th meeting on Thursday, presided over by the outgoing CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

Justice Ariwoola, who is set to formally retire from office on August 22, 2024, recommended that Justice Kekere-Ekun’s name be sent to the President for appointment as his successor. If approved, Justice Kekere-Ekun will become the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, following Justice Mariam Mukhtar who held the position from 2012 to 2014.

According to the NJC Director of Information, Soji Oye, sending Justice Kekere-Ekun’s name to the President for approval is the next step after the conclusion of the NJC meeting on Thursday. “The meeting just finished today, so tomorrow is when My Lord’s name will be taken to the President for his approval of her as the next CJN,” Oye stated.

In addition to recommending Justice Kekere-Ekun, the NJC also recommended 27 other candidates for appointment as judges of state high courts and one candidate as Khadi of the Sharia Court of the FCT, Abuja. The names of these candidates will be forwarded to their respective state governors and the President for approval.
