The National Judicial Council (NJC) has debunked as baseless a viral social media report claiming that two Justices who were part of the five-member panel that affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s election victory died mysteriously on the same day without any known medical reasons.

The report alleged that Justices Mistura Bolaji-Yusuf and Boloukuoromo Moses Ugo, who currently serve on the Court of Appeal, passed away suddenly. It claimed Justice Bolaji-Yusuf was found unresponsive by her family in the morning after being in good health the previous night. The report also stated that Justice Ugo was discovered dead and bleeding in his room after a loud disturbance around 2 a.m.

However, both the NJC and the Court of Appeal have dismissed the report as false.

“Please ignore the news, it is a lie. The Justices are alive, well and doing their jobs,” said NJC Secretary Mr. Ahmed Gambo Saleh.

A top official of the Court of Appeal, speaking anonymously to Vanguard, called the report “the handiwork of mischief makers.”

“It is totally false and mischievous. Their Lordships are well and in good health. It is most unfortunate that mischief makers will sit at a corner and wish death on others. Please ignore the false news,” the official said.

Justices Bolaji-Yusuf and Ugo were part of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal that, on September 6, 2023, upheld the election of President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC). The tribunal dismissed petitions filed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) challenging the election outcome.
