The National Judicial Council (NJC), under the leadership of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, has taken disciplinary actions against several judicial officers during its 107th Meeting held on November 13 and 14, 2024.
Ihe Council recommended the compulsory retirement of two Heads of Court for falsification of age. The Chief Judge of Imo State, Hon. Justice T. E. Chukwuemeka Chikeka, and the Grand Kadi of Yobe State, Hon. Kadi Babagana Mahdi, were found to have provided inconsistent dates of birth, leading to the Council’s decision.
Furthermore, the NJC suspended two judicial officers from office for a period of one year without pay and placed them on a “Watch-List” for two years thereafter. Hon. Justice G. C. Aguma of the High Court of Rivers State and Hon. Justice A. O. Nwabunike of Anambra State High Court were both sanctioned for various acts of misconduct.
In addition to these actions, the Council also issued a letter of caution to Hon. Justice J. J. Majebi, Chief Judge of Kogi State, for assigning a sensitive matter to a junior judge on the bench.
The NJC’s decisions demonstrate its commitment to upholding the integrity and professionalism of the judiciary. By taking firm disciplinary measures against erring judicial officers, the Council aims to maintain public trust in the justice system and ensure that judges adhere to the highest standards of conduct.
