The Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Wuraola Adepoju, has outlined her vision to boost staff welfare, improve passport services, enhance border security and build bridges with partner agencies.

In an exclusive interview, Adepoju highlighted ongoing cadet training, new vehicle deployments, planned housing projects and regular allowance payments to uplift personnel morale. She aims to raise funds for pending transfer allowances through budgets, technical partners and interventions.

On passport reforms, Adepoju noted issuing over 330,000 booklets since assuming office in May 2023. She has increased booklet supply, promoted passport control officers, added four new processing centers and reduced staff at offices to improve monitoring. Adepoju wants Nigerians to utilize online applications and collect over 7,000 unclaimed passports.

The NIS boss denied compromising standards despite recruitment pressure, citing guidelines to ensure credible candidates. She dismissed passport agents as illegal, urging direct online applications.

Adepoju outlined plans for technology upgrades and intelligence sharing to boost border security, following a clash between NIS personnel and bandits. She visited injured staff in Sokoto, promising to equip officers and collaborate with agencies to prevent attacks.

On discipline, Adepoju confirmed ongoing trials of 80 officials over passport racketeering and vowed zero tolerance on corruption. She did not divulge details on diplomatic passports issued to new political leaders, citing confidentiality.

Adepoju aims to be remembered as a people-focused reformer driven by transparency, efficiency and service delivery. She wants to elevate staff welfare, enhance migration management and inspire professionalism.

The Acting CG’s interview portrayed her multi-pronged strategy of reforming the NIS through uplifting personnel, optimizing operations and constructively engaging stakeholders.
