A three-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025, on Oremeta Street, Ojodu-Berger, Lagos State, trapping several individuals under the rubble. As of 2 p.m., nine persons have been rescued alive, with ongoing efforts to locate any additional victims.

The collapsed structure, an old and partially occupied building, housed the popular Equal Right Restaurant, bar, and parking lot on its ground floor, while the upper three floors remained unoccupied. According to Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the rescued victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and were promptly attended to by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Adeseye, speaking through the service’s spokesman, Skahiru Amodu, confirmed, “We have been able to rescue nine individuals alive, with no fatalities recorded so far. The ground floor was in use as an eatery, bar, and parking lot, but the upper floors were unoccupied. Investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing, and we are working to reach ground zero to ensure no one remains trapped.”

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) have been actively engaged in rescue operations since the incident was reported. Heavy-duty equipment, including an excavator, has been deployed to aid in clearing debris and locating any remaining survivors.

Adeseye emphasized the risks associated with unoccupied buildings, stating, “Unoccupied buildings lose structural integrity over time and are prone to collapse. We urge property owners to ensure regular maintenance and occupancy to prevent such incidents.” She added that the situation is under control, with no cause for public alarm.

An eyewitness, Femi Saheed, reported that the collapse occurred around 11 a.m., sending shockwaves through the community. “It happened suddenly, and people were in a panic. The Equal Right Restaurant is a well-known spot, so it’s fortunate that more people weren’t harmed,” Saheed recounted.

The cause of the collapse remains unascertained, pending a thorough investigation by the relevant authorities. LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, noted that the agency’s response teams are working systematically to ensure a comprehensive search and rescue operation.
