Former Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, has called for the strengthening of institutional frameworks to improve the enforcement of Nigeria’s cybercrime laws, warning that unchecked abuses in cyberspace pose serious threats to national security and public trust.

Olanipekun made the call while speaking at the 56th Convocation Ceremonies of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where he decried what he described as the chaotic and lawless nature of Nigeria’s social media space.

The senior lawyer expressed concern over the growing incidence of cyber-bullying, digital thuggery, character assassination and persecution of innocent Nigerians, stressing that citizens also have responsibilities under the Cybercrime Act to protect the rights of others.

According to him, Nigeria’s cyberspace has become a “bedlam” where people say anything without consequences, lamenting that citizens are increasingly exposed to harassment, intimidation and reputational attacks online.

“Nigeria is not a no man’s land. We are being ruled by law,” Olanipekun said. “Our social media space is chaotic. You can say anything and get away with it. Citizens are not being protected from harassment, banditry and character assassination online.”

He urged Nigerians, especially those with academic and professional training in cyber-related fields, to study and apply the provisions of the law, noting that such public platforms offer opportunities to educate citizens on their legal protections in cyberspace.

Olanipekun, who is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of UNILAG, also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fostering industrial harmony in Nigerian universities, saying the administration has helped stabilise the academic environment through policy reforms.

He noted that in the last eighteen months, there had been no major industrial disputes between university councils and staff unions, praising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for its maturity and understanding.

The senior advocate, however, renewed his call on the Federal Government to urgently review salaries and allowances of university staff as part of efforts to sustain industrial peace and prevent disruptions to academic calendars.

As part of the convocation activities, Olanipekun announced an annual scholarship of N500,000 for the best graduating male student across each of the university’s 19 faculties. He said the gesture was aimed at encouraging academic excellence among male students and challenging the growing dominance of female students in prize awards at the institution.

The ceremony was attended by several eminent Nigerians, including the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and the Chancellor of UNILAG, the Emir of Borno, Shehu Abubakar ibn Umar Garba El-Kanemi.

Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi, and businessman Wale Tinubu were also conferred with honorary doctorate degrees at the event.
