Veteran Nollywood actor and political leader, Kenneth Okonkwo, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying Nigerians have not benefited in any way from the removal of fuel subsidy.

Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and a lawyer, made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm programme.

When asked about his thoughts on President Tinubu’s Independence Day speech, Okonkwo said most Nigerians did not look forward to it because, according to him, it lacked sincerity and substance.

“Let’s first of all agree that it’s a truism that not just the young ones, but nobody looked forward to President Tinubu’s speech,” he said. “I only listened to it because I’m a public affairs analyst. People will question me on it, otherwise, I would not have listened to it. And why would people listen to propaganda?”

The actor-turned-politician accused the president of misleading Nigerians with false claims about the supposed benefits of subsidy removal.

“The president said Nigerians are benefitting from the subsidy removal. That’s a lie. I was paying ₦195 per litre and now paying ₦1,000 for the same thing, and you said I’m benefitting? This is a typical lie,” he said.

Okonkwo added that citizens have seen no improvement in their living conditions despite the government’s promises, alleging that both the subsidy removal and increased borrowings have only deepened hardship.

He concluded that the administration’s policies have brought no tangible benefits to ordinary Nigerians and called for more truthful, people-centered governance.
