The Nigerian Police Force has released a statement addressing the recent controversy surrounding the arrest of several individuals in Edo State, alleged to be members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), just days before the crucial governorship election.

In an interview on Channels TV’s “Politics Today”, Force Public Relations Officer ACP Muyiwa Adejobi clarified that those arrested were implicated in the gruesome murder of Police Inspector Onuakpor at Benin Airport on July 18, 2024. The arrests were made based on investigations and court warrants related to this case.

Adejobi explained that a viral video circulating on social media, showing officers attempting to arrest a man who was later mobbed by a crowd, was an incident where a suspect indicted for Inspector Onuakpor’s murder was being apprehended with a valid court warrant. He stated that the police chose to leave the scene in order to maintain professionalism amidst rising protests.

Regarding the individuals taken to Abuja after their arrest, Adejobi said they were arrested for unauthorized possession of firearms, an offense which allows for prosecution anywhere in the country under the Firearms Act of 2015. He emphasized that due process was followed in these arrests, in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

Adejobi strongly dismissed allegations that the police were biased towards any particular political party, saying, “The Police is not in possession of membership lists of political parties… We are out for suspects involved in the gruesome murder of a Police Officer.”

He reassured the public that the police will not tolerate the perpetrators of such a heinous crime going free, regardless of their identity or location in the country. The police remain committed to serving justice for the murdered officer.
