A male student at the Nigerian Law School’s Port Harcourt campus has reportedly died by suicide, following allegations of severe bullying and institutional neglect.

According to a student whistleblower who spoke through an anonymous account, the deceased had repeatedly raised concerns about being targeted by fellow students. Rather than investigate or intervene, authorities at the campus allegedly forced the victim to issue a public apology to the entire student body.
“The school did the exact opposite of protecting him. They made him apologise to the whole school,” the whistleblower stated. “Now he’s committed suicide after so many attempts to run away from the issue… and the school.”
A source told TheNigeriaLawyer that the student initially raised an alarm about his roommates, but upon investigation, the complaint was deemed baseless. He was compelled to send an apology via WhatsApp, but even after that, the school allegedly made him do a public apology in class.
After the incident, he was separated from the room he shared with the accused students. The source added that the student later approached the Students’ Affairs department, requesting to defer his admission as a way to escape the toxic environment. Instead of assistance, the request was allegedly dismissed, and he was reportedly chased away.
Tragically, the student’s body was discovered in his hostel room on the evening of Friday, May 30, 2025.
The whistleblower also accused the Council of Legal Education (CLE), which oversees the Law School, of attempting to mischaracterize the student’s death as being caused by “academic pressure.” This, the source claims, is a deliberate attempt to conceal deeper systemic issues and neglect.
According to the source, a climate of fear exists not only at the Port Harcourt campus but also at others like Lagos, where students are allegedly warned not to speak publicly about conditions on campus. “If you’re doing your job well and diligently, then why are you scared of what the world will say?” the source questioned.
TheNigeriaLawyer has withheld the name of the deceased student, as confirmation of family notification was not available at the time of filing this report.
As of press time, neither the Nigerian Law School nor the Council of Legal Education has issued any official statement regarding the incident or the serious allegations raised. Multiple attempts by TheNigeriaLawyer to reach school officials for comment were unsuccessful, leaving urgent questions about student safety, welfare, and institutional accountability unanswered.
