A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and activist, Mr Femi Falana, has said Nigeria is not making progress because it failed to prioritise ideology in leadership.

According to a statement on Sunday, Falana said this while presenting a paper in Lagos at the ‘Leadership for Good Governance’ series hosted by the Lagos State Public Service Staff Development Centre.

He said, “It is surprising that in Nigeria, ideology is not being discussed. That is the reason the country is not making progress in almost every endeavour of life. The world is expecting Nigeria to lead, not to follow, but the country is not living up to this billing, despite the fact that the nation is hugely blessed with human and material resources.”

“If leaders are not disciplined and irresponsible, the followers will follow the path of irresponsibility as well. Nobody is talking about the policies and programmes of aspiring leaders but where the candidates come from and their religions.”

The Director-General, Lagos State PSSDC, Dr Senukon Ajose-Harrison, said, “Our world today is undergoing a leadership crisis. This has made experts in both academia and industry to re-examine the need for appropriate and right leadership actions to address good governance and ensure that sustainable and stable societies and organisations evolve.”

The chairman of the lecture, Mr Lekan Fadina, said a leader needed to share his vision and lead the way to progress, adding, “A good leader cannot go unnoticed.”
