The new appointees are the current Secretary of Niger State Judicial Service Commission Hajiya Zainab Tahir Gani, Chief Magistrate of Court 2 in Minna, Hajiya Maimuna Talatu Abubakar; and the chief magistrate of Suleja, Hajiya Maryam Mahmud Magaji. Others judges also appointed by the NJC include Barrister Mohammed Mohammed and Barrister Minkailu Mohammed. The new High Court judges were all serving Magistrates and private legal practitioners who wanted to be upgraded. Over 10 magistrates from the state had indicated their interest to fill the five positions that became vacant following the retirement of some judges who attained the mandatory 65 years of age. Even at that, the current appointments have still not met up the number of the required High Court judges in the state, according to findings by Thenigerialawyer on Sunday. It was gathered that Minna High Court division has six High Courts without presiding judges while the three other High Courts in Suleja and New Bussa divisions are being supervised by a visiting judge who shuttles among Minna, Bida, Suleja and New Bussa monthly, a situation which is taking a toll on speedy dispensation of justice. Our correspondent gathered that four more High Court Judges will be going on retirement in the first quarter of 2016, including the current Chief Judge of Niger state, Justice Fati Lami Abubakar, who has just spent about three years on the saddle. Justice Mohammed Bima of Suleja High Court, Justice Yusuf Usman Tanko of Kontagora High Court division and Justice Idris Evuti of Lapai and Minna High Court divisions are also among those to retire in January, 2016. The Secretary of Niger State Judicial Service Commission, Hajiya Zainab Tahir Gani, who is among the newly appointed judges, confirmed this to us but referred our reporter to NJC in Abuja, which she pointed out was the appointing authority. “You know that the appointments was done in Abuja and there is nothing I can tell you on this matter”, she said.]]>
