The commission said in a statement by its Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Mrs Fatimah Mohammed, that it was awaiting the police report with a view to ensuring that justice was done. It said the police report would help it to ensure that appropriate compensation was paid to the family of the victim in accordance with the law. The statement quoted the Executive Secretary of the commission, Tony Ojukwu, as saying that the commission would stop at nothing in demanding accountability from law enforcement agencies for any violation of human rights in the course of their operations. The family of a former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, who described the deceased as their daughter, had written the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, over what they termed as the cold murder of the late Akapson. In a petition signed on their behalf by their lawyer, Mr Kayode Ajulo, the family said Akapson “was trailed, targeted, intercepted, her vehicle brushed, blocked and shot at close range by a police officer at Katampe District, Abuja.” The NHRC on Sunday commended the Inspector-General of Police “for ordering the detention and investigation of some policemen involved in the act that led to the death of Miss Anita Akapson.” It urged the Federal Government to ensure that justice “is given to the family of the deceased in no distant time”. The statement stated in part, “The NHRC boss recalled that it was in a bid to address cases of gross human rights violations such as extra-judicial killings, maltreatment, unlawful detention etc by the Police that the Commission early this year issued Directives 001/2018 on treatment of citizens and suspects by law enforcement officers. He regretted that such dastardly acts still exist in the force.”]]>
