The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered the suspension of electricity supply to consumers in Victoria Island and Ikoyi areas of Lagos state.

In a directive issued on Tuesday, the regulatory agency said its investigation revealed that Peninsula Independent Power Plant (PIPP) had violated the terms and conditions of its licence by supplying electricity to the customers without approval of the commission.

According to NERC, PIPP encroached on the distribution network of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) in charge of the area and tampered with its distribution infrastructure.

The affected consumers were listed as Landmark Tower and Village and Trinity Church, both along Water Corporation Road, Victoria Island.

Other affected consumers are Upbeat Recreational Centre; Admiralty Road, Lekki Phase 1; The George Hotel; 30 Lugard Avenue, Ikoyi; Second Toll Gate Plaza; Lekki-Epe Expressway; Ministry of Works and Infrastructure (Tolling Company); Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge; Street Light, Glover Road, Ikoyi and Batequip (Sun Heaven Hotel), Christ Avenue junction off Admiralty Road, Lekki Phase 1.

The rest are Motor Boat Club, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi; Lekki Peninsula (Lennos) Mall, 2/3 Blk, 10 Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1; Riverside Properties Ltd, Thompson Avenue, Ikoyi; Globe Motors Holding Nigeria Limited, 37 Cameron Road, Ikoyi and Mr & Mrs. Bolaji; 33B Cooper Road, Ikoyi.

The commission added that PIPP shall compensate EKEDC for loss of revenue for each day electricity was supplied to the customers.

“PIPP is hereby fined in accordance with section 75 of EPSRA the sum of NGN 10,000 for each day that electricity was supplied to the customers listed in 6 above in contravention of the law,” NERC said.

“The fine shall continue until the date of full compliance with this order.”

PIPP is an independent power plant that supplies 8.5 megawatts electricity through a 22km dedicated distribution to public water and lighting facilities network in the Lekki, Victoria Island and Ikoyi areas of the state.
