The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, through its Damaturu Forum Office, has fined the Yola Electricity Distribution Company ₦2.8 million over complaints arising from alleged violations of electricity consumers’ rights.

The sanction followed the consideration of complaints and submissions presented before the Forum by affected consumers and representatives of the distribution company.

The decision was delivered at a sitting presided over by the Forum Chairman, Engineer Mohammed Kati Machina, alongside four other members, while another member participated virtually.

After reviewing the complaints and the responses of YEDC, the Forum imposed a ₦2.8 million fine on the company and directed it to comply fully with all decisions and directives contained in the judgment.

The Forum, however, gave YEDC 10 working days from the date of the decision to lodge an appeal if dissatisfied with the outcome.

The ruling followed complaints brought by electricity consumers over issues they said amounted to violations of their rights in their dealings with the distribution company.

Reacting to the judgment, the Chairman of the Potiskum Community Joint Complaint, Abdullahi Adamu Ahmadu, and counsel to the complainants, Barrister Ibrahim Jauro, commended the Forum for giving both parties the opportunity to present their cases.

They described the judgment as fair and expressed hope that YEDC would implement the directives issued by the Forum to address the concerns raised by the affected consumers.

The decision adds to ongoing regulatory efforts by NERC to enforce consumer protection standards and ensure electricity distribution companies comply with obligations owed to customers.
