Yusuf Ola-Olu Alli (SAN) has said that corruption in the form of nepotism and favouritism has made it difficult for the country to enjoy good governance. Alli, in an interview with newsmen in Ilorin, said hope of good governance many people had, had been dashed by the government through nepotism and favouritism. He said that corruption is not only about financial impropriety but also involves many other bad practices that deprive people benefits of good governance. The lawyer cum social critic advised that one of the ways to get rid of nepotism and favouritism in government is to go back to the kind of politics played in the first republic where, according to him, no individual or group of some individuals saw themselves as the owners of the party. He explained that during the time, every registered member of a party was a financial member with the effect all of them were considered as owner of the party with equal stake in the party. He said that with this arrangement it was easy for the party or members of the party to call to order a government official elected on the platform of the party to the extent that if such official wanted to practice nepotism, he could be easily checked. Alli said that the situation today is that few moneybags fund the party and, as a result, dictate the tune both within the party and in the government He said with this situation what is being witnessed is the government official rewarding in cash those who promoted his election with their financial muscles or reward them in kind with appointments at the expense of many others who on merits and capability are more deserving of the appointment Speaking on the recent rating of Nigeria as the poorest country in the world, the social critic said poverty is pervasive in the land affecting most residents. Alli explained that the poverty was exacerbated by economic challenges in the country saying recession “only went off on the CBN’s books, it still lives with Nigeria. “ The lawyer said an average Nigeria who lives by his sweat find it difficult to live above poverty level. On the persistent security challenges in the country, the social critic advised that we should go back to the drawing board and look at the security architecture of the nation to address the challenges.]]>
