*Says It Will Do Everything Possible To Discourage Public Fundraising For Sick Members

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has expressed concern that it’s Branches are not doing enough to mobilize members to enroll for the NBA GIFSHIP health insurance scheme
NBA, in a statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer signed by its National Welfare Secretary, Kunle Edun, [234 803 869 5936] observed that it has been working tireless for Branches to submit list and properly completed forms of their nominees to be enrolled on the scheme. Therefore, it threatens not to entertain financial requests from ailing members unless the said ailing member is an enrollee of the insurance scheme
The statement read in part, “The NBA President and the National officers have observed that many of the branches are not doing enough to mobilize their members to enrol on the GIFSHIP health insurance scheme.
“The NBA had earlier paid N50m for the pilot scheme that will include 1000 of our members as beneficiaries. The NBA National Welfare Committee has been working hard to ensure that branches submit the list and properly completed forms of their nominees to be enrolled on the scheme.
“As the Welfare Secretaries of your branch, you were made automatic members of the three- man Committee set up by the NBA President in all the 125 branches to nominate members that will be part of the 1000 beneficiaries under the pilot scheme. How far have we carried out this assignment? Did we follow up with the beneficiaries nominated by the branches and ensure that they all duly completed their forms and submitted same?
“In fulfillment of the promise of the Olumide Akpata’s led administration, the NBA set up a Health Fund to cater for urgent and critical cases of our ailing members where such members may not be of good standing with the NBA but are critically ill.
“To ensure that our members take full advantage of the immense health benefits provided by the GIFSHIP scheme, we will be taking some measures that will make our members to consider their health as very important and therefore, do the needful by enrolling on the GIFSHIP scheme. Some of the measures to be taken will include the following:
“..The NBA will no longer entertain any request from any member for any assistance on any health issue except that member proves or it is shown that he is a registered enrollee of the GIFSHIP scheme.”
Furthermore, the NBA pledges to take all necessary steps to discourage its members from public fund raising for health purposes since there is already a provision for it by the Association. It therefore called on all branches to mobilize their members to enroll on the scheme.
“..The NBA will take steps to discourage public fundraising for our sick members because the NBA has already made provisions that will address the health needs of our members. Therefore, no member will be allowed access to the NBA Health Fund except he is first shown to be an enrollee on the GIFSHIP scheme.
“All branches are hereby further reminded and urged to mobilize all their members to enrol on the GIFSHIP scheme. It is just 15k per person. All necessary information have been published and will be re-circulated. However, pls call the under-signed should you have any question or need further clarifications.” the statement further reads.
