The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law has inaugurated its newly constituted statutory committees, task teams and special mechanisms as part of efforts to strengthen public interest litigation, research, policy advocacy and institutional reform.

The inauguration, held on Friday in Abuja, marks a major step in NBA-SPIDEL’s renewed drive under the leadership of its Chairperson, Assoc. Prof. Uju Agomoh, and the Section’s Executive Committee.

Among the appointments, legal practitioner and policy strategist, Folarin Aluko, was inaugurated as Chairman of the Public Interest and Development Law Research and Policy Committee.

The committee is a newly established structure designed to drive evidence-based research and policy development in support of SPIDEL’s public interest mandate.

According to its Terms of Reference, the committee will conduct legal and policy research, produce policy briefs and position papers, support strategic advocacy through evidence-based research, monitor emerging legal and development trends, develop law reform proposals and collaborate with academic and research institutions.

The committee has Chika Okoli as Vice Chairman, Vincent Odo as Secretary and Stanley Ekpa as Assistant Secretary.

It is also supported by a panel of advisors comprising Osita Chidoka; Ikhide Ehighelua; Prof. Abdulkadir Ibrahim Abikan, Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies; Chinyere Moneme, SAN; and Emmanuel Oluwabiyi.

Speaking after the inauguration, Aluko said the committee would work to ensure that SPIDEL’s interventions are guided by research, evidence and practical policy solutions.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that SPIDEL’s interventions are driven by evidence and supported by practical solutions capable of influencing law reform, strengthening institutions and expanding access to justice,” he said.

The inauguration forms part of NBA-SPIDEL’s broader institutional reform agenda.

The new committee structure is expected to expand the Section’s work beyond litigation to include research, legislative reform, detention monitoring, legal aid implementation, media engagement, capacity building and policy development.

NBA-SPIDEL said the development reflects a more integrated approach to advancing public interest and development law in Nigeria, while strengthening the Section’s capacity to respond to governance, justice-sector and human-rights issues through litigation, advocacy and policy engagement.
