The way legal services are delivered is fast changing due to advances in technology and business model innovation.

At the 13th Annual Business Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business law, experts have lend their perspectives on the technologies shaping the future of law.

Robert Dudley, Regional Director at Barbri, one of the panelists who spoke during the third plenary session, sharing his thought said that things are changing dramatically in the legal industry in the UK and other jurisdictions, and he has the belief that it will also reach Nigeria.

The career path of the millennial lawyer is not going to be linear but will come with a lot of new adaptations.

Israel Aye, a Partner at Primera Africa Legal, speaking on how lawyers are being regulated noted that the regulatory framework is still behind. He gave an example, on the rule against earning through an intermediary, the rule against advertising, and so on.

He also said that the present regulation has made the commercial service section still not attracting the right clients.

The big corporations do go out often to the UK to get legal services.

When asked by Daniel of the negatives of the legal app as they take away business from the law firms.

In responding, Rashida Abdulai said it is futile to want to stand in the way of progress because you want to preserve the status quo. Other professions have adopted technology, why not the legal profession?

In her final statement, she said that the main reason why technology is good and different from the traditional law firm is that several clients can be interacted with at the same time for the same service. Tech helps businesses to tap into scaling their services and income.

The conference ended with an assurance by Dr. Adefulu that all the solutions and recommendations from the conference, SBL will work towards implementing them as much as possible.
The Moderator for this breakout session is Nankunda Katangaza, a Co-Founder of Africa Legal & Tech Network.

Panelists were Robert Dudley, Regional Director at BARBRI, Israel Aye, Partner, Primera Africa Legal, Rashida Abdulai, CEO, Strand Sahara, Abimbola Craig, Producer, Ndani TV and Simisola Eyisanmi, Associate, Chris Ogunbanjo LP.
