The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, on March 5, 2025, received a delegation from the United States Embassy at the NBA Secretariat in Abuja.
The delegation, led by Mr. Timothy Smith, visited to explore avenues for collaboration, acknowledging the NBA’s pivotal role in strengthening Nigeria’s legal framework and security architecture.
During the meeting, the U.S. delegation expressed appreciation for the warm reception and highlighted key initiatives of the United States government in Nigeria. These included the Transparency Project and the enforcement of targeted U.S. sanctions on individuals implicated in corruption and human rights violations. Mr. Smith emphasized the U.S. government’s commitment to partnering with the NBA in promoting transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in Nigeria.
In response, NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and strengthening legal institutions. He outlined critical areas where collaboration with the U.S. government could be beneficial:
- Weak Enforcement of Terrorism Laws – The NBA President emphasized the urgent need for stronger enforcement mechanisms to effectively combat terrorism and enhance national security.
- Stifling of Online Freedom of Speech – He raised concerns over increasing restrictions on digital expression, advocating for a balanced approach that safeguards fundamental rights while addressing security challenges.
- Creation of State Police – Osigwe reiterated the NBA’s position on the establishment of state policing to improve localized security and law enforcement efficiency.
- Advocacy with the Military – The NBA President referenced the association’s recent intervention that secured the release of lawyer Kelvin Okoye, who was unlawfully detained by the Nigerian Navy, stressing the NBA’s commitment to ensuring due process and protecting the rights of legal practitioners.
The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding that the NBA, as a key stakeholder in Nigeria’s justice sector, will play a crucial role in advancing legal and security reforms. Both parties agreed to establish structured engagement frameworks to drive meaningful change and foster a secure and just society.
