The newly elected president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe (SAN), has pledged to uphold the integrity of the legal profession in the country.

In his acceptance speech following the NBA election results, Osigwe emphasized his commitment to running an inclusive administration that addresses the concerns of all members and contributes to societal advancement.

He also said that he has reached out to Chukwuka Nwabueze Ikwuazom, SAN, and spoke with him but is yet to get in touch with Tobenna Erojikwe on the phone. Osigwe made a plea to each and every member, thanking them in advance for their participation.

Osigwe secured victory with 20,435 votes, representing 50.52% of the total votes cast, as announced by the Chairman of the NBA Electoral Committee, Oluseun Abimbola (SAN). Tobenna Erojikwe and Chukwuka Nwabueze Ikwuazom (SAN) placed second and third, respectively.

The newly elected president also pledged to tackle issues hindering the administration of justice in Nigeria. “Under my stewardship, our Bar will uphold vigilance, responsiveness, responsibility, constructive engagement, and forward-thinking,” Osigwe stated.

Meanwhile, the outgoing NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), called upon those who lost in the election to accept the outcome graciously and collaborate with the winners to move the association forward.

The NBA election, conducted electronically, saw a total of 40,656 ballots cast out of the 72,059 eligible lawyers, representing a 56.4% turnout. The Electoral Committee reported extensive communication with voters, including 233,524 text messages, 655,652 emails, and 3,923 helpline calls.
