The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nyanya-Karu Branch, has vowed to institute legal action against the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) over what it described as the unlawful harassment, arrest, and detention of one of its members, Nnamdi Mbah, Esq.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Alexander Ebi Edim, and Secretary, Mazi Echika Ejido, and dated September 11, 2025, the Branch condemned the incident as a “grave assault” on the legal profession and the rule of law.
According to the statement, Barrister Mbah was supervising a property he manages at Aco Estate, Lugbe, Abuja, on September 9 when he was allegedly harassed, abducted, and detained by NSCDC officers from Sauka Headquarters. The Branch said the arrest stemmed from a property dispute involving a senior NSCDC officer who had paid money to an estate agent that later absconded.
“Instead of pursuing the said agent, the officer abused his office to unlawfully arrest and detain Barrister Mbah,” the statement alleged.
The NBA Nyanya-Karu leadership further disclosed that despite repeated demands, no written complaint was presented against Mbah, no complainant appeared, and the officers involved refused to identify themselves. The investigating officer reportedly introduced himself only as “Mark” and declined to provide further details.
Mbah was allegedly held from the afternoon of September 9 until 5 p.m. on September 10, when he was released on bail following the intervention of the Branch leadership.
Describing the conduct of the officers as a “dangerous abuse of power,” the Branch said it has resolved to:
- File a Fundamental Rights Enforcement action against the NSCDC and the officers involved.
- Submit a petition to the Commandant General of the NSCDC and the Minister of Interior over the “unprofessional and unlawful actions” of the officers.
The NBA Nyanya-Karu Branch warned that it would not tolerate the harassment, intimidation, or unlawful detention of lawyers by security agencies under any guise.
