At the plenary session of the just-concluded Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference (AGC), Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, Mr. Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, underscored the need for lawyers to be actively involved in the NBA while also stressing the Association’s responsibility to uphold values that command societal respect.

Speaking on the theme “Why Lawyers Should Be Involved in the NBA – and Why Society Should Take Lawyers Seriously”, Akangbe noted that people are naturally drawn to value. According to him, when the NBA consistently demonstrates integrity, excellence, and commitment to justice, it will not only earn society’s recognition but also secure its respect and leadership influence.

“The Association must remain true to its core values upholding the rule of law, defending justice, and promoting professional development. That is how the NBA will stay relevant and respected both within and outside the legal community,” he said.

Akangbe, a long-time advocate of member-focused reforms, emphasized that the NBA must become more lawyer-centric, prioritizing the welfare of members while creating opportunities for professional growth and value creation.

“In looking out for lawyers and helping them grow, the NBA not only strengthens the legal profession but also reaffirms the indispensable role of lawyers in shaping a just and equitable society,” he added.
