As the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) gears up for its leadership elections, aspirants are being called upon to focus on proposing innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the association and its members. One such pressing issue is the need for a functional library and e-library at the NBA headquarters, which would serve not only the legal profession but also benefit other professions in Nigeria.

The establishment of a national library accessible to all NBA members is long overdue. As the largest bar association in Africa, the NBA has a responsibility to provide its members with access to a wide range of legal literature, ensuring they remain informed and up-to-date on various legal matters. However, the benefits of such a library would extend far beyond the legal profession.

A well-equipped NBA library would serve as a valuable resource for professionals in other fields, such as academia, journalism, and public policy. By providing access to legal resources and expert opinions, the library would facilitate interdisciplinary research and collaboration, fostering a more informed and engaged society.

The proposed library need not be limited to a physical space; an online library would suffice, providing access to resources from anywhere in the world. While the NBA currently offers young lawyers access to the Law Pavilion, this initiative does not adequately address the needs of the entire bar or the wider professional community.

Aspirants are encouraged to think beyond mere popularity and busy campaigns, and instead focus on purposeful initiatives that will benefit not only the legal community but also contribute to the growth and development of other professions in Nigeria. The creation of an NBA library, whether physical or digital, would be a significant step towards upholding the rule of law, advancing the cause of justice, and promoting knowledge-sharing across various sectors.

In the event that the NBA lacks sufficient funds to establish and maintain a library independently, the NBA should consider partnering with the Public-Private Partnership (PPA) to ensure the library’s functionality and sustainability. By collaborating with private sector entities, the NBA can leverage additional resources and expertise to create a world-class library that serves the needs of its members and the broader professional community.

As the NBA leadership elections approach, it is crucial that aspirants prioritize the establishment of a functional library and e-library as a key component of their campaign platforms.
