*Commends Branch For Choice Of Theme
*Endorses Deliberations On Pragmatic Solutions To National Security Challenges

A Member of the NBA Welfare Committee, Auta Nyada, has congratulated the Benin branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on the occasion of its 2022 law week.

In a message made available to TheNigeriaLawyer, Nyada praised the branch for its choice of theme for the annual program describing it as “intuitive, apposite and pertinent to current issues facing Nigeria as a nation.

The NBA Benin 2022 Law Week is themed: ”Security: Panacea for Growth”.

According to Nyada, it is not in doubt that the issue of Security (or lack of it) is so alarming against the peaceful coexistence of Nigerian Citizens, stressing that it is in this regards that the drafters of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) thought it wise to include the issue of security as part of the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy as encapsulated in Section 14 (2)(b) thus:

”The security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government”.

He noted: “The question as to whether the government is living up to its expectations of securing lives and properties across the regions of the country is highly probing in today’s Nigeria.”

He continued “The brutal and orchestrated annihilation of human lives across the country has cast serious doubt as to whether the citizens of this country would as a matter of sincerity experience developmental growth and realise their economic, political and intellectual potentials.”

In the statement he emphasised that this is not a time to politicise the issue of security which is at the front burner of most national conversations currently but proposed that dialogue and deliberations to produce pragmatic solutions to the crisis be held. It is to this end, he lauded the theme of the branch’s law week.

“This is not the time to politicise this issue. It is a time for us to deliberate and engage in discourse that would bring pragmatic solutions to our security challenges, threatening disintegration, shattered dreams and inordinate aspirations facing us as a nation. This to my unbiased mind is what the Benin Bar has placed as handwriting on the wall.

It is my frantic opinion that as Lawyers, we must through our training, calling and experience, make conscious and deliberate efforts to engage the Bar and impact the society positively towards ensuring a peaceful and secured society; without which, the future of our trade is doomed. This is a journey we must embark on, individually and collectively.”

He also commended the Law Week Planning Committee for the day to day programmes set out for this year’s Law Week and the calibre of resource persons involved in the event, and expressed no doubt that the Law Week will be intellectually rewarding.
