The 2019 Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association Benin Branch, commenced on a high note on Monday, the 1st of July, 2019, at the Prestigious Uyi Grand Event Centre; Benin City, with the conferment of Awards on deserving Awardees, among who are the Chief Judge of Edo State, Hon. Justice Esohe Frances Ikponmwen FCJEI, who bagged an NBA Benin Life Time Achievers’ Award for His Lordship’s unquatifiable contributions to the development of our Laws and the Rule of Law.

Two Brother Judges, the Chief Judge, Honourable Justice Esther Amenaganmwon Edigin and Honourable Justice Joe Itsebaga Acha, both bagged an NBA Benin Merit Award for their contributions to the development of Law and the process of the Rule of Law .

The immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Osayuiku Oshodin was also honoured with a Life Time Achievers’ Award for his humanity and contribution to the development of Society.

Also honoured was a lawyer cum politician/pastor, Osagie Ize Iyamu, a Former Secretary to the Edo State Government and the Candidate of the Peoples ‘ Democratic Party, during the last Gubernatorial Elections of the state. He was honoured for his positive contribution to society as well.

The Benin Bar at the opening day of the Law Week also honoured two distinguished retired Jurists in Edo State, Hon. Justice Isaac Aliyu and Hon. Justice Joseph Otabor Olubor for their distinguished service to the Judiciary in Edo State and the advancement of the law.

Earlier in the opening ceremony, Human Rights Activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa Esq., caused to be delivered a thought provoking lecture on the Rule of Law in advancing the Nigerian democratic outlook. The lecture was factual and mordant in a manner that spoke naked truth to power.

Osaro Eghobamien, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, also caused to be delivered another terse lecture on the India Perspective in the electricity reform.

The second day of the law week was also packed with mind-blowing lectures.

The first session chaired by Hon. Justice E.A Edigin, on the Independence of the Judiciary was delivered by the blunt and intrepid Dr. Osagie Obayuwana, and discussed by Osaro Osemwegie.

The second session was chaired by Justice J A. Acha; Dele Igbinedion Esq., delivered a practical lecture on the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Edo State: The Journey So Far, with the OC Legal Zone 5 Headquarters of the Nigerian Police, Bright Ojiezele, Justice Efe Ikpomwoba of the Edo State Judiciary and the Edo State Ministry of Justice, Director of Public Prosecutions, G.E Adekambi all discussing and giving variant views on the touchy issues in the matter.

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Paul Usoro, SAN, made a surprise appearance at the NBA Benin Law Week on the second day, which was welcomed with a standing ovasion by all members present. Young lawyers and other lawyers also present took turns to take photographs with the President of the Bar.
