The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has appointed Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN, to lead the legal team challenging the extension of Adamu Mohammed’S tenure as the Inspector General of Police.

THENIGERIALAWYER(TNL), had reported that President Muhammadu Buhari on 4th February 2021, extended the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu by three months.

The tenure of Adamu expired on February 1, 2021, by attainment of 35 years of service by virtue of section 18(8) of the Police Act, 2020.

The Nigerian Bar Association, reacting to the illegality of the appointed constituted a legal committee to initiate a legal action against the president.

Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN is to lead the legal team in the action which is against the Police Service Commission and others at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The Learned Silk appointed out that the extension of the tenure of the Inspector General of Police is an aberration of the Constitution and also an outright abuse of power as well as violation of the provision of section 215(1) of the Constitution; sections 7(3), 7(6) and 18(8) of the Police Act 2020. He further pointed out the need for organs of government regardless of who is concerned, to uphold the law as no one is above the law. He stated that the essence of the Nigerian Bar Association is also to serve as a watch-dog to avoid desecration of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and other relevant laws.

Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN also appreciated the President of the NBA – Mr. Olumide Akpata for ensuring that the NBA doggedly stands up for the rule of law.

The matter is slated for 20th April 2021 for hearing before Hon. Justice A. R. Muhammed
