The Chairman of NBA Abuja Branch (Unity Bar) Chairman, Moses A Ebute SAN has called on the executive arm of government to ensure that the judiciary is fully independent as one of the ways to promote and preserve democracy in Nigeria.

The Chairman also vowed to come up with programs and initiatives on traditional and emerging areas of law that will inspire and assist their members, particularly young lawyers, to upscale their legal career.

To achieve this, he promised to work hand-in-hand with the Unity Bar Young Lawyers forum and will restore the understanding that was once enjoyed as young members of the Bar which gave everyone a sense of belonging in the Bar.

Ebute stated this on Wednesday during his acceptance speech after he was sworn in as the Chairman of NBA Abuja Branch (Unity Bar).

The chairman promised that his team will ensure that the unity Bar remains united and indissoluble by choice, borne out of love and understanding even as he assured to make attempts at reuniting with their colleagues from the other divide.

He further promised to ensure that NBA Abuja branch continues to be the vanguard for justice, peace and equality in Nigeria. He also assured that the next election of the Unity Bar continues in the trajectory of credible, free and fair elections.

Ebute, who emerged at a consensus election, following the demise of late Chairman, of the Association, Dr. (Mrs.) Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and resolved to honour that trust.

“I humbly accept my appointment as the Chairman of our prestigious Bar to serve out the term of our late Chairman, Dr. (Mrs.) Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau.

“Am deeply touched and still in shock on my consensus election as Chairman of our beloved Unity Bar” he said.

Continuing, he said “we shall also continue to protect the rights/interest of the members of the Bar but will not fail to mete the necessary punishment where any of us is found wanting.

“To this end, I advice all members of the Bar to be law abiding and shun every act of professional misconduct”.

Ebute stressed that the executives cannot fulfill the mandate given to them without active engagement of critical stakeholders of the Bar.

Consequently he appealed for commitment of members, love and magnanimity and solicited for extension of cooperation and support given to the past chairman of the Branch to his administration.

On what he intends to achieve during his tenure, Ebute said:

The one thing I have to do is to bring back our out members so that we will have a truly united bar so that we have a full house whenever we are having our meeting.

He promised to carry everybody along particularly some of their members that have moved to other branches.

The Chairman said that his major objective is to get the Unity bar a befitting office and move away from a renting space.

In his words: Where we are now is a rented place. By the grace of God, under my leadership, I want us to own it even if it means buying it or building our own secretariat because we have an undeveloped plot. We will go to our SAN friends and solicit for fund to build our own secretariat. You can see the challenge we have , some of us could not come here because of car park, see hold up here, we need to move to a better place where we can really meet up our time schedule, he added.

Some Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), Elders and past Chairmen of the Unity Bar were present to grace the swearing in ceremony.
