Several government ministries, departments, and agencies in Abuja have closed in support of the two-day nationwide strike announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Our correspondent, who visited the Federal Secretariat and other major areas, noted that these locations, including the popular Radio House housing some agencies under the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, were deserted as workers chose to stay home.

Banks in the surveyed areas were also closed.

One of the major commercial banks situated at the Federal Secretariat informed our correspondent that there would be no banking operations due to the NLC’s strike.

The NLC announced the strike following the federal government’s failure to engage stakeholders in organized labor in discussions about mitigating the impact of the removal of subsidies on Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) on the “poor masses.”

In August, organized labor staged a one-day protest that paralyzed activities in major cities across the country.

The NLC’s reasons for the nationwide shutdown include accusing the police of besieging the national headquarters of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, alleged worker rights exploitation in Imo State, interference in trade union matters by the Abia State government, and proposed demolition by the new Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, among others.
