At the July 8 Call to Bar ceremony held in Abuja, a total of 5,728 new lawyers were formally inducted into the Nigerian legal profession, marking a significant milestone in their careers and a pivotal moment for the country’s justice system. Yet beyond the ceremonial fanfare came a powerful call for reform anchored on the urgent need for a structured culture of mentorship and ethical grounding within the legal profession.

The event, attended by key stakeholders, legal luminaries, and members of the Bench and Bar, doubled as a mentorship forum aimed at equipping the new wigs with the skills, discipline, and values necessary to thrive in a legal environment many say is grappling with a credibility crisis.

Speakers at the ceremony unanimously emphasized that mentorship must no longer be treated as an optional support mechanism, but as a critical component of legal training in Nigeria. “In the legal profession, where tradition, ethics, and discipline form our identity, mentorship is not a loss. It is a necessity,” one senior speaker declared, stressing that proper guidance is vital for helping young lawyers navigate professional complexity with clarity, courage, and character.

Addressing the newly inducted lawyers, a senior member of the legal community issued a stern reminder about the weight of responsibility attached to the legal calling. “You’re happy today that you’ve qualified to be lawyers it’s a privilege. But remember, you can be stopped from practicing law. We have debarred five senior advocates. Many have lost their licenses. Let this be a warning and a guide.”

Adding to the reflections, former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, who has spent over five decades in legal practice, delivered an impassioned charge to the new entrants. “I’ve been a lawyer for 53 years. It’s been hot, it’s been nasty  but it is my profession. I can’t go elsewhere. And I say to young lawyers: those who want to leave the profession, don’t leave it. Practice it for 53 years as I have. And if you still don’t find satisfaction, then you can leave.”

In a further show of commitment to mentorship reform, the Chairman of the Body of Benchers, speaking through a representative, disclosed that a national mentoring policy for the legal profession is currently in its final stages. “We are in the concluding phase of developing a comprehensive framework that will institutionalize structured mentorship, ethics, leadership cultivation, and professional development at all levels of the legal system,” he said.

As the new lawyers don their wigs and begin the next chapter of their careers, the message from the nation’s legal leadership is unequivocal: beyond the robes and celebration lies a demanding terrain one where only those anchored in integrity and guided by mentorship can truly excel.
