The Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) national grid collapsed to zero megawatts in less than three hours on Wednesday.

The National Grid, which crashed to zero megawatts at 11:28 am and 12:00 pm was immediately restored negligibly to 4Mw with only Omoku and Shiroro producing 3mw and 1mw respectively.

At 12:48 pm, the grid rose to 40mw, which the Nigerian Electricity System Operator of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) sent to only the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). This left the other DisCos with zero allocation.

By 14:59pm, the grid again collapsed to 0Mw.

The TCN was silent on the situation as it never bothered to issue a statement on the cause, effect and solution.

Besides, its General Manager, Public Affairs, did not respond to The Nation’s telephone calls and text message.

Consequently, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) yesterday informed its customers on the situation.

In a message titled: “Power failure due to grid collapse,” it noted that the collapse caused outage nationwide.

According to the KEDC, the TCN experts were working to restore the power supply.

The message reads: “This is to kindly inform the general public that the country’s electricity grid has, on Wednesday, collapsed, causing a blackout throughout the country.

“However, experts from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) are working to address the challenge so as to restore power supply soon.

“While we apologise for any inconveniences, we herewith assure improved supply as soon as we get supply from the national grid.”

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) confirmed the collapsed to its customers.

The energy distributor said: “Dear Customers, we regret to inform you of a system collapse on the National grid at precisely 11:27a.m today, July 20.

“We are in talks with the Transmission Company of Nigeria to ascertain the cause of the collapse and a possible restoration timeline.

“We will keep you updated.”

The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company said “We regret to inform our customers that the power failure currently being experienced is as a result of the collapse of the national grid which occured by 11:28 this morning.

“We hereby assure our esteemed customers of restoration of normal power supply to us.”
