…As CAS Abubakar Describes Graduation as Milestone in Military Transformation

No fewer than 35 pilots have been inducted into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) following their graduation from the 401 Flying Training School (FTS), Kaduna, marking a significant boost to the force’s operational manpower.

The newly winged officers—comprising 10 Basic Transport Course graduates and 25 Ab-initio Student Pilots—are expected to be deployed to various theatres of operation across the country to support ongoing security missions.

Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, who presided over the graduation ceremony on Saturday, charged the new pilots to see their qualifications not as personal accomplishments, but as national responsibilities.

“Earning your flying qualification is not just a personal achievement, it is a national responsibility. You carry not just rank and wings, but the hopes of millions of Nigerians who depend on us for safety and security,” Abubakar stated.

The graduation, which comes less than six months after NAF took delivery of 12 additional fighter aircraft to bolster its fleet, underscores the force’s commitment to sustaining combat readiness and strengthening national defense.

In January 2025, the NAF acquired several aircraft including two King Air 360i light transport planes, four T-129 ATAK helicopters, two Agusta Westland 109 Trekker helicopters, and four DA-62 surveillance aircraft. The CAS also disclosed that the Air Force is expecting 24 M-346 fighter jets and 10 additional AW109 helicopters from Italy in the coming months.

Speaking further, Air Marshal Abubakar reiterated that training remains central to NAF’s operational strategy.

“In the Nigerian Air Force, we say that the quality of our training determines the strength of our operations. This is why, under my leadership, we are upgrading training institutions, inducting more aircraft, and evolving our doctrines to meet the demands of modern warfare,” he explained.

He commended the 401 FTS for over 40 years of excellence in pilot training, having produced more than 700 pilots for the NAF, Nigerian Navy, and allied African nations such as Cape Verde, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Niger, and Benin Republic.
