The National Association of Catholic Lawyers (NACL), Lagos Chapter, on Friday said it secured the release of no fewer than 150 inmates through free legal services in 2025.

The President of the state chapter of NACL, Florence Atuluku, disclosed this at the association’s 2025 annual Christmas celebration and gift presentation to inmates held at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

The event was attended by inmates and management of correctional centres in Lagos State, as well as the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Martins.

The programme featured a Mass and the administration of the sacrament of confirmation to 25 inmates by the Archbishop.

Bags of rice, confectioneries, toiletries, clothes, disinfectants, beverages, cash, and educational materials were also donated to support the inmates’ rehabilitation. The items were contributed by the Prison Apostolate of the Church, the NACL, the Christian Women Organisation, and other groups.

Speaking at the event, Atuluku described the visit as a re-engineering of redeeming values aimed at supporting inmates’ reform.

She noted that in 2025, the association secured the release of about 150 inmates through free legal aid.

According to her, the association not only offers humanitarian support through material gifts but also deploys legal services to help inmates regain their freedom at no cost.

“Through our professional services, we look through the records to find out those that have stayed without trial and bring them to the fore with a view to getting them better conditions.

“In my interactions with inmates, I am struck by the tragedy of wasted human potentials; their voices echo regret, pain, and longing for a second chance.

“The truth is sobering; many outside the correctional centre walls are guilty of similar failings, shielded only by privilege or circumstances.

“The difference is not only morality, but opportunity,” she said.

She added that the association would intensify its efforts in 2026 to decongest correctional facilities, particularly for inmates involved in minor offences.
