Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has approved a salary increase for the state’s 459 customary court judges.

This adjustment, announced on Monday by Reuben Onyishi, the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, will take effect from January 2025. The new salaries align with Enugu State’s recently implemented minimum wage of ₦80,000.

The decision follows Governor Mbah’s earlier move to raise the minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦80,000, addressing the rising cost of living.

The salary review comes as a response to a memo submitted on November 25, 2024, by Osinachi Nnajieze, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal Matters. Onyishi described the Governor’s approval as prompt and “gracious,” emphasizing the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of judicial officers.

This measure is expected to enhance the operations of the state’s 153 customary courts and reinforce the government’s dedication to supporting the judiciary and strengthening the justice system in Enugu State.
