My Husband Was Shot While Attempting To Assist Gunmen Who He Thought Were Stranded Drivers — Wife Of Imo Based Lawyer, Duru

Mrs Chika Duru, a wife of a 51-year-old Imo-based lawyer, Paul Duru, has narrated how her husband was shot by unknown gunmen on Friday, November 12, 2021.

Chika, in an interview with the PUNCH Newspaper, said it happened when Duru was coming back home after meeting a client. On his way back 9:14 pm that day, Duru met some individuals standing on the middle of the road acting as though Stranded. Unknown to him, the people were gunmen. As he stopped and offered to help, they shot him and set his car ablaze.

Her words, “My name is Mrs Chika Duru. I am 49 years old. I am a businesswoman based in Imo State. I am the wife of Barrister Paul Duru who was attacked by unknown gunmen on Friday, November 12, 2021. He is 51 years old.

“On that Friday, he came back from work and got a call from a client who wanted some legal advice. He quickly rushed off to the place and was on his way back at about 9.14pm and saw a car in the middle of the road, beaming light and people were waving. So, he decided to stop and see what was going on. He said he thought those people might be in trouble and needed help. He is a lawyer and all he does is render help to humanity. As he stepped out of his car and asked them what was going on, they showed him their gun. They immediately hit him with the head of their gun and shot him, pushed him into his vehicle and set it ablaze. So, he was there in the vehicle, bleeding while the vehicle was on fire.”

Chika said the survival of her husband from that attack which happened around Oriakpa, Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State is a miracle that only God can explain. She expressed gratitude that he is alive

“It could only have been God, because if you see the damage to the vehicle, you’d not believe anybody would survive that kind of an attack. It was just a miracle. If not for the grace of God, we would be telling another story. When I asked him, he said all he could remember was that he passed out at some point, but somehow he got the strength to push himself over the vehicle and landed on the ground. Some Good Samaritans helped him.” Chika said when asked how her husband escaped

She said her husband is in the hospital Recuperating. According, the husband is a peaceful man and had no misunderstanding with anyone prior to the incidence.

She said, “Well, he is getting better; he is recuperating. They have done some surgery on him, because his face was really damaged by the gunshot. In fact, I just thank God almighty. The state he was brought into the hospital, nobody believed he would survive it. We are managing to pay up the bills. The family is really feeling the weight of this, because this is not the kind of news anybody planned to hear towards the end of the year.

“My husband is a peaceful man. If you come to our neighbourhood and ask, you’d find out that he is a people’s man. He is known to always give help to people in the area. He would not see you in need and turn his eyes the other way. That is why this people capitalised on this to want to kill him, but our God is alive. How many people would see a car in the middle of the road and offer to help? But because of his pure heart and love for humanity, he stopped and see what he could do to help.” she said

She noted that no one from government has called her though there is very little the government can do now. According to her, the deed has already been done.

“They should come and help us. In any way they deem fit, they should support us through this time. We are law-abiding citizens. They should not just leave us to face this alone.” she added.
