The lawyer to Moroccan national Khadija Diab has dismissed claims linking her whereabouts to Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, insisting that the woman has been in Morocco with her family since April 2026.

Bilkisu Abdulrasheed Chedi, Executive Director of Women Aware of Rights Initiative and counsel to Khadija, said the allegations suggesting that her client was being kept by Gumi were false and unfounded.
Chedi spoke in a video shared on Gumi’s verified Facebook page amid controversy generated by claims made on social media by Khadija’s husband, Nasiru Idris Musa, concerning her whereabouts.
According to the lawyer, Khadija returned to Morocco in April after the organisation helped her obtain an emergency travel document following her allegation that her international passport had been seized by her husband.
“So all the allegations that she has been with Sheikh Gumi are false and unfounded because it’s not possible for a person to be in two different countries at the same time,” Chedi said.
She added that Khadija’s family confirmed to the organisation that she arrived safely in Morocco and had remained with them since then.
Chedi said Khadija first approached Women Aware of Rights Initiative in October 2025 with allegations of serious domestic abuse, inadequate feeding and maintenance, as well as what she described as an “unlawful and unnatural conjugal relationship” by her husband.
The allegations remain claims made by Khadija and her lawyer.
According to Chedi, the organisation advised Khadija to undergo medical examinations following her complaints, and the lawyer claimed the tests indicated that she had contracted sexually transmitted diseases.
She said Khadija subsequently made it clear that she no longer wished to remain in the marriage, citing alleged emotional and physical abuse.
Chedi said legal proceedings were then commenced on Khadija’s behalf at the Area Sharia Court, Daura Road, Kaduna, where the matter was first mentioned on October 3, 2025.
The case was later adjourned to November 11, 2025, after counsel to the husband reportedly filed a motion seeking reconciliation.
According to the lawyer, proceedings were subsequently delayed after the defendant changed counsel and the new lawyer challenged the jurisdiction of the court.
Chedi said the matter was further affected by the absence of lawyers in court and a judicial strike in Kaduna, while Khadija, who had become emotionally distressed, eventually decided that she wanted to return to Morocco.
She said because Khadija’s passport was allegedly being held by her husband, Women Aware of Rights Initiative assisted her in securing a travel document from Moroccan authorities.
Chedi added that Moroccan immigration authorities confirmed Khadija’s arrival, while the Moroccan Embassy in Nigeria also communicated to the organisation that she had safely returned home.
Before leaving Nigeria, Khadija reportedly authorised Chedi to continue handling the legal proceedings on her behalf.
The lawyer said the earlier case before the Daura Road Sharia Court was discontinued on June 10, 2026, while a fresh action was filed in July seeking dissolution of the marriage under Sharia law.
Chedi consequently urged members of the public to disregard claims that Khadija was being kept by Gumi, saying her intervention was intended to clarify the controversy surrounding the woman’s whereabouts.
She maintained that Khadija has been in Morocco for several months and that allegations connecting her continued absence from Nigeria to the Islamic cleric were without basis.
