*Ojukwu Express Regret & Shock Over Money Incident

The inauguration ceremony for newly conferred Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Chikaosolu Ojukwu has sparked controversy, drawing criticism from lawyers over the spraying of money that took place.

The ceremony, held on November 27th, was followed by a reception organized by family, friends, and well-wishers. However, the celebration took an unexpected turn as a video circulated on social media showing Cubana Chiefpriest dancing and indiscriminately spraying money on the new SAN and a live band.

The act of spraying money at events is a common cultural practice in Nigeria, especially during celebrations. However, the legal community has been divided over whether such a display is appropriate at an event of such professional significance. Many have questioned whether a new SAN should allow or be associated with such a practice, given the elevated responsibilities that come with the title.

The controversy sparked a debate among lawyers and non-lawyers, with some praising the celebratory atmosphere and cultural traditions, while others argued that the event should have been a dignified example for young lawyers and the public.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) had previously cautioned new SANs during their inauguration, emphasizing the need for integrity, self-discipline, and a high standard of advocacy. The CJN reminded them that, as custodians of justice, they must be mindful of their actions, utterances, and associations as whatever you hitherto regarded as private life will now be treated as public life by members of the public; and there is nothing you can do about it.

In response to the circulating video, Chikaosolu Ojukwu issued a statement condemning the unsolicited spraying of money during the reception. He expressed regret over the lack of control he had over the actions of individuals at the crowded event. Ojukwu clarified that he had protested at various times during the occasion and condemned the spraying of money during a Christian praise and worship session.

The statement emphasized that Ojukwu does not endorse or sanction acts contrary to the nobility of the legal profession and the Rules of Conduct for SANs. The newly appointed SAN urged those with videos of the incident to take them down and give the press release the same prominence.

It is worth noting that the Central Bank of Nigeria has previously condemned the abuse of the national currency, and individuals caught engaging in such activities can face penalties, including fines or imprisonment. According to Section 21(3) of the CBN Bill, it states, “For the avoidance of doubt, spraying of, dancing or marching on the Naira or any note issued by the Bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under Sub-section (1) of this section.” If convicted the person risked six months in jail or a fine of N50, 000.

As the legal community grapples with differing opinions on the appropriateness of the money spraying incident, the incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between cultural practices and the professional expectations placed on legal luminaries.
