Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has criticised the Nigerian military over its handling of the alleged coup plot involving some officers, insisting that the authorities should have apologised to Nigerians.

In September 2025, the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) arrested 16 senior military officers, including a brigadier-general, a colonel, and several lieutenant colonels and majors, over an alleged plot to overthrow the government.

Recently, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) announced that it had concluded investigations into the cases involving the 16 officers, who were initially apprehended for acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations. Some of them are now set to face trial before military judicial panels.

Falana spoke on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, reacting to the military’s disclosure that some of the officers would be arraigned over an alleged attempt to overthrow the government.

According to the senior advocate, the development suggests that the military deliberately misled the public after earlier dismissing reports of a coup plot.

“Yesterday, the military authorities ought to have apologised to Nigerians. People in authority must learn to take us seriously as a people,” Falana said.

He described the reversal of such a serious position without a public apology as unacceptable, noting that the military had previously denied the existence of any coup plot.

“If you had made a statement three months ago that there was no coup plot and, in the course of your investigation, discovered that the matter went beyond indiscipline, you ought to have apologised to the Nigerian people,” he added.

Falana argued that a public acknowledgment of the earlier denial, followed by an apology after confirming the allegations, would have been a more honorable approach.
