Host nation Mexico launched the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa, delighting a packed crowd at the historic Mexico City Stadium and making a strong statement in the tournament’s opening match.

The atmosphere was electric as Mexico became the first team to kick off the expanded 48-team World Cup, and the home side wasted little time seizing control. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring in the ninth minute, capitalizing on a defensive mistake to send the home fans into celebration mode.

South Africa struggled to contain Mexico’s attacking pressure and saw their task become even more difficult after Sphephelo Sithole was sent off early in the second half. Mexico continued to dominate possession and territory before veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead with a powerful header in the 67th minute, effectively putting the contest beyond reach.

The match became increasingly physical as frustrations grew for South Africa. A second red card reduced the visitors to nine men late in the game, while Mexico also finished with ten players after César Montes was dismissed in stoppage time.

Backed by more than 80,000 supporters, Mexico looked confident, organized, and determined throughout the contest. The victory gives El Tri an early advantage in Group A and provides the perfect start to their quest for a deep run on home soil.

For South Africa, the defeat serves as an early setback, but with two group-stage matches remaining, hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds remain alive. Mexico will next face South Korea, while South Africa takes on the Czech Republic in crucial Group A encounters.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, is the largest edition in the tournament’s history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches. Mexico’s emphatic opening-night victory has ensured the competition is off to a memorable start
