The immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Augustine Alegeh, has stated that currently his biggest motivation as a lawyer, who has been in practice for 32 years, is to give back to the profession. While noting that he is no longer enthusiastic about legal practice as he used to during his younger days in practice as a lawyer, he hinted that mentoring young lawyers informed why he opened an ultra-modern law office in Ikoyi. At an event in Lagos to celebrate the opening of the new Alegeh and Co law office on Thursday, June 14, Alegeh unveiled his AlegehLaw Foundation to cater for the yearnings of young lawyers. He said, “Our thrust in Alegeh Law Foundation would be to design programmes that would benefit a greater number of the younger ones in our Profession. “We would embrace and apply available communication platforms and alternative and revolutionary methods to ensure that help gets to the majority.” He added, “We believe firmly in your future as successors of our noble profession, and that is why we are investing in your future. “If Lawyers do their work the Country and its people would benefit. Our Country needs a lot of lawyering and our young lawyers must be made ready to fight the battles that we have failed to win. “Our support to them is our contribution to the legal Profession and our Country.” The objectives of the Foundation include liaising with Law Faculties in the various tertiary institutions in Nigeria to proffer support to Law undergraduates. Provide adequate 1(one) month training programmes for young Lawyers in collaboration with established Law firms; and championing improvement of the standard of young lawyers for the overall sustenance of excellent practice of law, among others. Present at the occasion were the former governor of Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori; Mr. Kazeem Adeniji, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State; Mr. Okey Wali (SAN), former NBA President; and Olumide Akpata, Chairman, NBA Section of Business Law. Others are Justice Nehizena Afolabi of the Federal High Court, a former Partner at Alegeh and Co.; and Mr. Ferdinand Orbih (SAN), among others. In his remarks, the Lagos AG, Adeniji Kazeem, while congratulating Alegeh for establishing the foundation, said, “It shows the exposure of the managing partner, his intellect, all those things we need to inculcate in a new lawyer. “You get exposed when you work in some of those places that enable you to function as a lawyer.” AlegehLaw Foundation is reaching out to a wide group of young lawyers by partnering with Law Pavilion to provide one-year premium Law Pavilion law library for 500 young lawyers. The partnership with Law Pavilion, is said to be the beginning of the projects of the foundation.]]>
