* Proposes Investment, Sustainability Fund To End Reliance On Government, Individual Donations

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Jalingo Branch, has proposed the establishment of a Bar Investment and Sustainability Fund aimed at strengthening the branch’s financial independence and reducing its reliance on government and private individuals to finance its activities.
Chairman of the branch, Dr. Daniel Philemon Saredau, unveiled the proposal during the branch’s general meeting on Friday, explaining that members would contribute to the fund according to their years of post-call experience.
According to Saredau, creating sustainable income-generating initiatives would help the branch overcome recurring financial challenges and move away from the traditional practice of soliciting funds whenever major programmes or activities are to be undertaken.
“We wish to propose for a Bar Investment and Sustainability Funds: this initiative we believe would build financial independence for our branch.
“We believe that having an investment funds where members contribute base on year post-call, will improve financial sustainability and ease the branch from financial challenges,” he said.
The chairman said his administration was deliberately pursuing partnerships capable of improving legal practice, members’ welfare and the overall institutional strength of the Jalingo Bar.
He disclosed that the branch had entered into partnerships with several organisations within the first few months of his administration.
“Within few months of our administration, we have secured partnership with organisations to ease and transform the Bar practice, and as well improve members’ well-being,” Saredau said.
He added that the branch was also working to strengthen its relationship with security agencies.
According to him, the administration has established a partnership with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on human rights matters and with the Legal Aid Council to facilitate pro bono legal services.
The branch has also partnered with the Taraba Geographic Information Service (TAGIS) on land-related initiatives, including land for the NBA and its members, as well as measures aimed at protecting members’ professional services.
Saredau said a partnership with Brim Energy Services allows members to enjoy a 10 per cent discount on refills, while an arrangement with the Anfani Bandawa Foundation is expected to provide LawPavilion resources for young lawyers.
He also disclosed a partnership with X-Power Solar Solution to provide solar facilities for the Bar Centre and make similar services available to members for their homes, offices and other spaces.
Other partnerships secured by the administration include Covera for legal drafting software, Jurisflow for legal practice management software and Sanlam Allianz for life assurance cover.
The chairman further announced that the branch had entered into a partnership with IDI Technical Services for the acquisition of printers and photocopying equipment to strengthen the operations of the NBA Business Centre.
According to him, the initiative is expected to equip the centre with a new photocopying machine and improve the services available to members.
Saredau also said the branch’s online presence had significantly improved, particularly across Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.
He commended the Nigerian Tribune, Rock FM Jalingo, Taraba News and SumTV for what he described as their accurate projection of the activities of the Jalingo Bar.
Members of the branch who spoke during the meeting commended the Saredau-led administration for the initiatives introduced to improve legal practice, institutional sustainability and members’ welfare.
