Sidi Ould Tah of Mauritania has been elected as the ninth President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), marking a new era of leadership as Nigeria’s Dr. Akinwumi Adesina prepares to complete his decade-long tenure.

The AfDB announced Tah’s election on Thursday following rounds of voting by the Bank’s Board of Governors during its Annual Meetings held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The Board comprises finance ministers and central bank governors representing the Bank’s 81 member countries.

Tah is expected to assume office on September 1, 2025, when Adesina’s tenure officially ends.

In a competitive race, Tah emerged victorious over four other contenders: Amadou Hott of Senegal, Samuel Maimbo of Zambia, Abbas Mahamat Tolli of Chad, and Swazi Tshabalala of South Africa.

With a doctorate in Economics from the University of Nice-Sophia-Antipolis in France, Tah brings a wealth of experience, having served as Mauritania’s Minister of Economic Affairs and later as Director General of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa. He has also completed executive education at Harvard University and the London Business School.

Throughout his campaign, Tah pledged to steer the AfDB toward mobilising private capital, integrating Africa’s vast informal sector into the formal economy, strengthening the Bank’s engagement with the private sector, and boosting its capacity to respond to the growing impacts of climate change.

His election comes at a pivotal moment as the AfDB continues to drive infrastructure, energy, and economic development across the continent.
