Soldiers and policemen were among the casualties of a gun battle between security operatives and bandits in Kebbi State, PRNigeria reported yesterday.

Quoting an intelligence source, scores of the bandits engaged security forces who attempted to foil their operation, in heavy gun duel that lasted for hours.

“There were heavy casualties on both sides,” the online medium quoted its source.

They were allegedly killed at Kanya village while foiling an attack on members of the community, local sources revealed.

Abdullahi Yalmo, the Chief Press Secretary to Kebbi’s Deputy Governor Samaila Yombe, confirmed that the attack was on the convoy of his boss on Tuesday night in Kanya village.

He confirmed in a statement the killing of a police officer, identified as Idris Umar Libata, an Assitant Superintendent of Police (ASP), during the clash.

Yalmo explained that his principal was in the company of the Commanding Officer, Zuru Army Barracks, to console the families of those whose sons were killed by bandits’ attack that claimed 68 local vigilance group members and scores of civilians in the state.

The attack came barely 24 hours after the killing of dozen members of some vigilante groups in an ambush, at nearby Sakaba.
