The candidate for the position of the 1st Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Saleh Bawa, in his manifesto, has laid out the plans he aimed to execute if elected to the position.

The eight pages manifesto was divided into four major headings namely: introduction, serving the bar, serving the public and my vision for the bar.

The manifesto which pointed out some notable achievements of him began with short introduction that Bawa, is the Principal Partner in the Law firm of Baw, Bawa & Partners. He got his LLB from ABU Zaria, in 2004 and his LLM from UNIJOS in 2003, after having a breakthrough of studying what he referred to as his passion and calling in the legal profession in his 3rd year of studying chemistry in ABU Zaria.

Furthermore, Bawa went on to list areas he has served in the past. In his capacities he was opportune to serve both the Bar and the Public. He was the Vice Chairman and subsequent chairman of the NBA Jos Branch from 2020-2022, pioneering member of the Governing Council Plateau State Multi-Door Courthouse, as well as championing the cause f human rights of Nigerians and defense of Nigerian women and children.

Bawa below outlines his plans for the Bar when elected 1st Vice President;

  1. Expand the impact of the Human Rights Committee to ensure the focus of the Bar towards promotion of Rule of Law.
  2. Strengthen the body of Vice Chairmen of Branches to provide additional local interventions in cases against brutality against lawyers, sexual and gender-based violence and cases of discrimination against disadvantaged persons.
  3. Work with the president and the executive committee of the NBA to promote collaborations with local and foreign Human Rights bodies to further expand the reach, scope and influence of the Bar.
  4. Work with the president and the executive committee of the NBA to introduce and spearhead the use of mobile apps that will connect legal practitioners to persons seeking legal aid. According to him, this will be an intervention to connecting lawyers to clients across the country and beyond.
  5. Promote the creation of a training platform for dissemination of contemporary, practical and intellectual dialogue that will explore issues of social, cultural and economic interest for the expansion of legal thoughts and subsequently social engineering and developments.
  6. Initiate partnership between the Human Rights Institute of the NBA and key criminal justice stakeholders across the country for the purpose of providing Human Rights training, research and citizens oversight.
  7. Work with the president and the executive committee of the NBA to engage the Nigerian Police Force to institutionalize the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme to provide an opportunity for pre-trial detainees have access to legal services.
  8. Consolidate the Bar`s advocacy role in the pursuit of constitutional principles of good governance and observing the rule of law.
  9. Work with the president and the executive committee of the NBA to provide independent governance scorecards for the various arms and organs of government.
  10. Derive the recognition and formalization of pro bono services within the NBA whilst working with the Bench; rewarding members who provide legal services on a pro bono basis.
  11. Work with the president and the executive committee of the NBA to establish NBA Human Rights Clinics within the various branches designated to work with , which will provide a hybrid learning and networking platform for Legal practitioners in Nigeria.
  12. Work with the executive committee of the NBA to consolidate the secretariat reforms.
  13. Work with Branches to use technology to create efficient Bar centers for the benefit of members and the general public.
  14. On a final note, Mr. Bawa pledged to defend the honor of the Association, act towards its best interest.
