A 35-year-old man, Monday Ikeagwu, has been ordered by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abakaliki to be held in a correction center for allegedly threatening to kill his own mother and stealing a substantial sum of money from her.
According to the police, Ikeagwu was charged with threatening the life of his mother, Jacinta, and stealing N625,000 in cash from her on February 7th in Obodoma Ekka community, Ezza North local government area of Ebonyi state.
The prosecution counsel, Inspector Chinagorom Eze, stated that Ikeagwu’s actions are punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State, Nigeria, 2009.
Magistrate Lillian Ogodo did not take Ikeagwu’s plea due to lack of jurisdiction and ordered that the case file and all exhibits be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice. The matter has been adjourned until March 29th.
Despite the defense counsel, Solomon Eguji, requesting bail for his client, Inspector Eze strongly objected, arguing that Ikeagwu may disappear if granted bail. The court ultimately decided to deny the bail application.
