In a heart-wrenching tale shared on X (formerly Twitter), a young Nigerian man, known as naetochukwu01, has revealed how his mother’s anger derailed his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play soccer in Australia at the age of 15.

The incident, which took place two weeks before his scheduled departure, has left an indelible mark on his life and sparked a heated debate about the role of parental support in nurturing children’s dreams.

Naetochukwu01 recounted that he was scouted to play for a team in Melbourne, Australia, a dream come true for the aspiring soccer player. However, a fateful Sunday after church, a heated argument with his mother turned his world upside down.

In a fit of rage, his mother stormed into his room, seized his travel documents, soccer jerseys, boots, and other belongings, and took them to the backyard. Using kerosene and matches, she set everything ablaze, leaving the young man devastated and helpless.

“Immediately, she lit the fire and threw it in, her eyes cleared,” naetochukwu01 wrote in his post, describing the moment his mother realized the gravity of her actions. He managed to recover only his international passport from the ashes of his dreams.

The post has ignited a firestorm of reactions on X, with users divided in their opinions. Some have expressed outrage at the mother’s actions, labeling her a “witch” for sabotaging her child’s future. “This is for those who say a mother cannot be a witch to her own children,” wrote user Ajibola Akinx. Others have pointed out the financial implications, with user anamnesis 🇳🇬 commenting, “Same woman can’t pay his son school fees anymore.”

On the other hand, some users have defended the mother’s actions, citing cultural differences and the importance of respecting one’s parents. “We are Africans not uncultured humans pls…” wrote user Crypto Bullish🐃. Another user, Ajirioghene Alakpa🎖, chastised naetochukwu01 for hissing at his mother at the age of 15, saying, “You deserve what you got.”

Naetochukwu01 acknowledged that his mother has apologized repeatedly for her actions, and he still loves her despite the incident. However, he laments the suffering he has endured due to the lost opportunity and hopes to find success in another endeavor. “I just hope I win big with something else because the suffering that act has put me through can’t be explained,” he wrote.

This story comes on the heels of another revelation by Pa Onakoya, the father of Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya, who admitted to initially opposing his son’s passion for chess. Pa Onakoya confessed that whenever he saw his son playing chess as a child, he would pack everything away, wanting him to focus on his academics. He never imagined that chess would bring his son fame and success.

These two stories underscore the complex dynamics between African parents and their children’s dreams and aspirations. While some parents may have good intentions in steering their children towards more traditional paths, their actions can sometimes have unintended consequences, stifling their children’s potential and leading to resentment.

As the debate rages on social media, it serves as a reminder of the delicate balance parents must strike between nurturing their children’s passions and ensuring their well-being.
