Public commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has raised concerns over the state of Northern Nigeria, describing the region as a “land of the living dead.”

Shehu made the remark on Saturday in a post on his official X handle, where he painted a grim picture of a population he said is physically alive but psychologically weakened by insecurity, hardship and poor leadership.

According to him, many people in the region are living in fear, confusion and trauma, making them unable to confront the realities around them or demand meaningful change.

“The current inhabitants of Northern Nigeria are alive but dead,” he said.

Shehu said the region’s people have become overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty, adding that the situation has reduced their capacity to respond to the challenges confronting them.

He also criticised leadership in the region, accusing political elites and traditional institutions of failing to provide credible direction, protection and accountability.

According to him, the problems facing the North have been worsened by what he described as compromised elites, weak traditional institutions and passive citizens.

“They are spineless, visionless, planless and have been reduced into a priceless laughing stock,” he wrote.

“All these things are possible because they have no credible leadership, with compromised elites and cowardly traditional institutions, docile citizens, all together surrounded by the venoms of envy, hate, greed and man’s inhumanity to man.”

Shehu further suggested that religious leaders had also failed to provide the kind of moral leadership needed at a critical time in the region.

“RIP Northern Nigeria. Imams and priests are not available for burial because most of them are standing on a mandate,” he added.

His comments come amid persistent concerns over insecurity, poverty, displacement, political failure and social breakdown in parts of Northern Nigeria.
