Edo state police public relations officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, a Superintendent of Police, has disclosed that investigation is ongoing in the death of three lodgers in hotel’s fire in Benin.

The three lodgers, including lovers: Bright Amechi, Michael Awowea and Cynthia Ogiugo, lost their lives at a popular hotel (name withheld), on Emoavwodua Street, off Limit Road, in the Edo state capital.

Our reporter gathered on July 16, that the victims – two males and a female, were sleeping in their rooms, when there was sudden fire at 4 a.m., on the first floor of the hotel, with the smoke suffocating the lodgers, who became unconscious.

Nwabuzor revealed that some suspects had been arrested, but he refuses to disclose their identities.

He, however, noted that a guest in the room, where the fire started, and an official of the hotel, had made useful statements to the police.

Edo PPRO said: “The area’s Divisional Police Officer (DPO) contacted the Edo State Fire Service, and the officials quickly rushed down, and put out the fire.

“The three unconscious persons were immediately rushed to Edo State Specialist Hospital, Sapele Road, Benin City, and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where Bright Amaechi and Michael Awowe were confirmed dead.

“While at the Edo State Specialist Hospital, Cynthia Oguigo was confirmed dead. The three bodies were deposited at the morgue of Edo State Government-owned Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City.”

Nwabuzor also assured that the sad incident would be thoroughly investigated, and the persons that were found culpable would be prosecuted, to serve as a deterrent to others.
